The closed seat

For beveled and straight chisels

The closed seat was developed to precisely sharpen bevel and straight chisels for wood turning and carving. Since the chisel is attached to the seat center, you only need to attach the tool once to grind both bevels. When one side is ready, you simply flip the device upside down and sharpen the other side until both are symmetrical.

Thanks to a unique and patented design, the device also accommodates chisels with an oval section.

The device aligns the chisel so that it is parallel to the universal support and you can sharpen both straight and curved edges. Max. width of 32 mm chisels.

The open seat

For roughing gouges, splitting tools and large carving gouges

The open seat, in which the tool is secured with a top screw, is used for tools that have a straight cutting edge relative to the shank, such as splitting tools, molding tools, roughing gouges and wide carving gouges with a width of up to 50 mm.

The seats are secured with a screw at the bottom, which also allows you to choose the angle of the chisel.

For sharpening carving tools, we strongly recommend using the SVS-50 device with the TTS-100 Turning Tool Positioner.

This way you can reproduce the exact shape and edge angle as many times as you want.

You'll also save time because you'll only remove a minimal amount of steel each time you sharpen.

Wet sharpening on your Tormek gives you a very sharp edge that will last much longer.

A very sharp gouge cuts easily and you will notice that this gives the wood a very smooth surface and often there is no need to sand.

Using an SVS-50 on a bench grinder

For wood turning tools, if you have a new tool and need to remove a lot of steel in order to change a profile, you can also use the SVS-50 on a bench grinder with the BGM-100 mounting kit .

But in this case you will have to be careful not to burn the edge.

After the initial rough shaping on the bench grinder, leave the tool in the fixture and pass through the Tormek machine to give the edge its final sharpening.
