This spathe is not an unequivocal replica of a historical model, but a reconstruction based on original finds from the 2nd and 3rd centuries.

From the late 2nd century CE, the long Roman spatha gradually replaced the shorter broadsword. By the 3rd century it had already become the standard weapon of the Roman imperial legions and auxiliary troops and was also used by gladiators. The exact origin of the spatha and why it so quickly supplanted the effective and much feared broadsword in the mid/late Roman Imperial period is still the subject of much debate among historians, archaeologists and scholars. lovers of ancient Rome. Unfortunately, while it is widely accepted that spathae are of Celtic origin and owe their rapid popularity to changes in fighting techniques and military tactics among Roman infantry and cavalry, the lack of reliable sources on the subject often leads to speculations and to much more complex whole simplifications.

The Roman longsword that we offer here has a wide double-edged EN45 spring steel blade with two fullers on each side and a ricasso of about 5 cm under the hilt. The cutting edges are unsharpened and the continuous tang of the blade is screwed onto the end of the handle (brass nut). The handle with a generous pommel is made of wood and has brass accents. The hilt is adorned with engravings and the guard has a brass protection plate on the blade side.

The Roman One-Handed Sword comes complete with a red wood/leather scabbard with brass fittings - a muzzle strap, circular clevis, frame or continuous side border and decorative center ridge with built-in belt loop for wear on the belt or bandolier (max. belt width approx. 4.5 cm). The most striking feature of this scabbard is obviously the larger than average round plate or disc at the bottom (also called the box band), which is artistically etched with a rosette design.

It is specified that this Roman sword is not suitable for battles. It is intended as a collector's item or decorative item and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
