The Order reached its greatest splendor in the 13th century. The Templars considered themselves knights of God, honor of the Church and Christianity. Their motto was NON NOBIS, DOMINE, NON NOBIS, SED TUO NOMINI DA GLORIAM. Give glory, not for us, God, not for us, but for your name. This was a very well organized military force, and they were the fighting troops of all the Crusades. They were in the vanguard during the attack and in the rear guard during the retreat. During the century, they ensured the effective government of the Latin kingdom of Constantinople. They paid no taxes or tribute, obeyed only the pope, and owned property throughout Europe and the Middle East.
