Model 2017, carbon steel SK-5
The Samburu people of the harsh northern borderlands of Kenya are a semi-nomadic people of tall, lean individuals who make their living as shepherds of sheep, goats, donkeys, camels and cattle. The warriors of this tribe, known as the Lmuran, are particularly impressive: they never cut their long, braided hair and paint their faces and torsos with beautiful designs developed using a cosmetic mixture of animal fat and red ochre.
Given the constant threat to livestock and herds from predators and outlaw shiftas (bandits) who may strike at any time, they rarely venture out of their kraal (small settlement with a fence) without weapons. Any warrior worth his salt would be inconceivable to ever be caught without a spear.
The Samburu warrior's spear, which is over 2 meters long, is the most advanced spear in the world. This spear could be described as the .300 Winchester Magnum of the spear world. It can be used at long range, fly straight, take a flat trajectory, hit hard and penetrate deep. Cold Steel was inspired by the Samburu tribe's spear and developed its own version using modern materials.
Each Cold Steel Samburu spear consists of three components:
- the pointed leaf-shaped spearhead, which is welded to a sturdy steel shaft ;
- the reverse, the compensating tip (also called sabot), which can be used as an alternative tip during throwing practice to protect the actual blade for more important occasions;
- the black hickory shaft, which serves as a connecting piece between the tip and the shoe and is tapered at both ends.
For ease of transport, the Samburu spear is delivered unassembled. The spearhead and shoe only need to be assembled with the handle and screwed together with the fastening material provided. A Secure-Ex® sheath is included in the delivery.
Note: When manufacturing the Samburu spear, Cold Steel places great importance on being as robust as possible. If you bend the shaft or shoe again, the spear can easily be straightened with a vise or hammer. The solid hickory shaft may break sooner or later and need to be replaced.
SK-5 carbon steel
Japanese SK-5 carbon steel is traditionally used in the manufacture of a variety of hand tools such as chisels and wood saws. Due to its high universal toughness, excellent edge retention and exceptional abrasion resistance, this steel has proven itself in many countries.
