With the patented Tormek drill sharpening device DBS-22 you can now sharpen your drill bits (3-22 mm) with the highest precision. The optimum point and clearance angle can be set according to the needs of each type of drilling, which depends on the diameter of the drill and the material to be drilled. You can totally resharpen worn or broken drill bits to perfect shape.

4 facet tip

You achieve a 4-facet point offering the ideal cut because the bevel of industrial drills becomes a centering point. The 4-facet tip does not hunt and the required pressing force is significantly reduced compared to a usual cone drill tip.

A precision-ground 4-facet point heats up less, extending the life of the bit. Independent tests show that a sharpened Tormek bit lasts up to 4 times longer than a new normal bit¹.

Controlled sharpening

By working according to the laws of physics and cooling the metal continuously, the risk of overheating the steel causing it to lose its hardness or creating micro cracks is eliminated. The operation is completely under your control, and the sharpening progress is constantly visible.

¹Uddeholm Tooling AB 2010. 15mm deep holes are drilled in reinforced steel with 6mm drill bits. With a rotational speed of 1,326 rpm, and a feed of 0.15 mm per revolution, the bits sharpened with the Tormek system held an average of 327 holes where the new bits with an S-point held 72 holes.

Questions and answers

Why is the 4-facet tip so effective?

It considerably reduces the pressure force required on the center of the drill, i.e. the tip, reducing heating and giving more strength to the cutting edges. It noticeably improves the cut of the drill bit.

Why does a sharp drill bit last longer?

The 4-facet point and the high precision of the sharpening (the two cutting edges are sharpened in a perfectly equal and symmetrical manner) give the drill maximum efficiency and its service life is considerably extended.

What determines an exact and straight hole?

The 4-facet shape allows the bit to drill straight and round holes with close tolerance. Sharpening both cutting edges perfectly equal and symmetrical is particularly crucial. Both cutting edges must work identically so that the bit drills a round, straight hole with a diameter no larger than its own. Otherwise, the longest cutting edge working alone will heat up too much and will wear out faster. This results in rapid wear of the bit which ceases to function properly.

Which point angle to choose?

Drill bits usually have a point angle of 118° or 130°. Hardened steel and stainless steel require a wider angle. Aluminum is also best drilled with an open angle. In drilling plexiglass, the risk of splitting when the drill bit goes through is reduced with a wide angle tip. Center drills generally have a 90° point.

Does the draft angle matter?

The choice of the clearance angle is essential for the cutting efficiency and the life of the bit. The optimum clearance depends on both the diameter of the drill bit and the material to be drilled. A hard material requires a lower angle while a soft material supports a more open angle. Standard drill bits have a 11° taper and 118° point angle, this works for most holes.

How do you know if the steel has overheated using a bench grinder?

In general, the overheating of the steel is not visible, but an overheated drill bit dulls quickly, and can even break. By working with the laws of physics, and constantly cooling the edge, we eliminate the risk of overheating, tempering of the steel, and the development of micro-cracks.
