The Tormek Blackstone Silicon is designed to form and sharpen high speed steels (HSS) and other uncommon alloys. It can also retouch tungsten carbide. The SB-250 does not provide faster grinding on regular carbon steel than the original Tormek Grinding Wheel.
The combination of hardness, shape and size of its abrasive grain is specially designed to operate efficiently on the slow rotating machine of the Tormek system. Its abrasive capacity is particularly useful for forming tools with large bevels, where the pressure that can be applied is limited, particularly for planer knives and turning planes.
The grain is, like the original Tormek grinding wheel, 220 and can be reduced to 1000 with the SP-650 grinding wheel. Thanks to its sharp and fairly small grains, Blackstone Silicon removes metal very effectively even with slow rotation. Blackstone Silicon also offers exceptional wear resistance. You can even use tungsten carbide tools with the already established shape.
Fits Tormek T-8, Tormek T-7 and previous Tormek models with a grinding wheel diameter of 250mm.
* Distinguish the shape and sharpening of the tool. In forming, you remove steel to achieve a shape and edge of your choosing. Sharpening is just a touch-up of an existing shape to revive the edge.
