New November 2021: Sandrin Torin Carbon Fiber Premium Version -
Like all Sandrin knives, the Torino has a tungsten carbide blade which, with its unusually high hardness of 71 HRC, far exceeds any steel in terms of abrasion resistance and edge retention. The new coarse blade finish ("Meteorite Pattern") gives the Torino, designed as an all-purpose knife, a striking "rough" appearance. The countless marks on the blade in different directions are obtained by grinding with fine diamonds.
The Torino is Sandrin's first one-handed knife. The opening pins attached to both sides of the blade serve as an opening aid. The new Recoil Lock allows the open knife blade to be closed smoothly with just one hand.
The use of tungsten carbide for utility knife blades was long considered impossible. Due to the extremely high degree of hardness and the resulting increased susceptibility to breakage, the miracle material in its previous form was not attractive to the knife industry.
Alessandro Colombatto, owner of Turmond S.p.A. based in Turin / Italy, managed to find an ideal composition precisely for this purpose. With a still incredible hardness of "only" 71 HRC, the knife blades from Sandrin Knives are quite flexible and considerably less susceptible to breakage than ceramic blades.
Edge retention is achieved which is far superior to any known conventional or modern steel. The manufacturer claims the cutting edge stays sharp 20 times longer than the best premium powder steels. And although the blades are chrome free, Sandrin knives are just as rust resistant as stainless steel knives.
