SVD-186 Tool for gouges (SVD-185)
With the Tormek SVD-186 gouge jig, you can easily sharpen your semicircular woodturning gouges to razor sharpness. This high level of control allows you to reproduce exactly the profile of your choice.
With this gouge sharpening device, you can also sharpen wood carving tools with complex profiles, such as curved or curved carving gouges and barleycorns.
SVD-186 for wood turning tools
You get the exact reproduction of the profile and edge angle of your profiling and hollowing gouges, so you can be sure that the tool will behave in the same predictable way on the lathe, every time you sharpen it. Used correctly and in conjunction with your Tormek tool sharpener, this is the best way to give you faster or sharper results.
The device can be adjusted for different side bevel lengths. Create your own profile combination or choose one from those recommended on the profile selection table in the instructions.
You can also sharpen your bench grinders with the SVD-186. Install your bench grinder on the special shaft provided with the device and you will have a controlled sharpening. Watch the video to see how it works!
(If you have the first version of the Tormek SVD-180 gouging device, you can equip it with the SVD-005 to be able to sharpen bench grinders as well.)
Superior edge
Wet grinding on your Tormek gives you a very sharp edge that will last much longer. A very sharp gouge cuts easily and will give the wood a very fine surface, there is often no need to sand.
Full control
With the TTS-100 Turning Tool Positioner, you'll get exactly the profile and edge angle you want based on your turning. Even the length of the wings on the side can vary so that the shape of the gouge suits your way of turning.
An identical reproduction
Thanks to the exact reproduction of the shape and angle of the cutting edge, sharpening will take less than a minute. Since you only remove a fraction of a millimeter with each sharpening, your turning tools will last for years, probably a lifetime.
Gentle on steel
With the Tormek system, the cutting edge is continuously cooled with water and there is no risk of the steel overheating and softening.
SVD-186 on a bench grinder
If you have a new tool and need to remove a lot of steel in order to modify a profile, or even create a smaller edge angle, you can also use the SVD-186 on a bench grinder with the BGM mounting kit -100. But, in this case, you will have to be careful not to burn the edge. After the initial rough shaping on the bench grinder, you'll move on to the Tormek machine to give the cutting edge its final sharpening.
Thanks to the patented turning tool positioner TTS-100, you maintain the exact same profile and the same cutting edge angle, which facilitates the passage from the grinder to return to the Tormek device. Obtain the exact identical angle. You get the best of both worlds with the same system: the fastest steel removal available and the sharpest edge possible!

SVD-186 for wood carving tools
Tormek's slow speed wet grinding wheel is ideal for sharpening your woodcarving tools. The SVD-186 simplifies the sharpening of tools for carving even curved or curved ones. The wheel is gentle on carbon steel and eliminates the risk of overheating delicate cutting edges.
The device can be adjusted to match the curvature of the shank so you can create an even bevel across the entire convex shaped cutting edge. You can also sharpen angled gouges with the same superior results.
For wood carving tools without pre-made profiles, the easiest way to set the edge angle is to simply color the bevel to see where the sharpening should take place.
Note that for the most delicate carving tools, honing on the Tormek leather honing wheel may suffice with a little Tormek honing paste.
What is different between SVD-186 and SVD-185?
The SVD-186 is an improvement of the SVD-185. SVD-186 now fits tools up to 36mm wide, improved tool holding disc and simple and precise click adjustment. The guide insert has been shortened for better use with the Tormek T-3 and T-4.
