Viking
The Viking is a revision of a classic Helle which was produced as part of a fundraiser for a cruise around the world of a Viking drakkar. The knife is remarkable not only for its historical interest, but also as an excellent all around the knife.
The blade is rather thick and made of laminated carbon steel. The black finish of the heat treatment is left on the sides for rustic look. The silk of the blade is hammered on a puck shaped like a diamond. The handle is subtly shaped for more comfort and control with a variety of handles. It comes with the traditional sheath hanging from a thong.
Maintenance
Helle knives are designed to keep their cleanliness as an outdoor life companion. But it is always important to take care of your knife and her sheath.
The handle. Dry the sleeve with a wet soft cloth and occasionally wax.
The sheath. The leather must be impregnated from time to time with a colourless impregnation agent (grass or wax) to keep supple. Carefully dry the sheath of room temperature if it is wet.
The blade. wipe the blade with a wet soft cloth and if the treatment with fat from time to time.
Cost
Use a diamond tool or wet stone for sharpening. Place the flat knife bucket to the sharpening tool and work all the blade. Work on one side until you can feel a slight bavure on the opposite side. Put aside and repeat the procedure until you feel the blind on the first side. You have now established a edge.
Remove bavures by rubbing the blade gently on the sharp surface on both sides, as if the cut slices very thin. Keep the bucket flat to the size-crayon and move from one side to the other until the bavure is gone.
If the blade is very hot or damaged, use a meule and much fine water and sharpen until you have a rough edge. Use as much cooling fluid and never sharpen on a dry stone. A hot front earth loses its heat treatment and the ruins of the blade.
